Fast 'n' Bulbous - Tribute to Captain Beefheart

This long-out-of-print, rarely seen album from the early days of compact discs is possibly one of the best tribute albums ever. Well at least it's one of my favorites! A couple famous bands, some not-so-famous, a few dimly remembered 80's bands and some you probably never even heard of. Maybe one or two of these groups were formed just for this release it's hard to tell since the packaging is skimpy with no liner notes at all. Zippo.Don't matter tho. Whether these bands are trying to emulate Captain Beefheart & The Magic Band or whether they're trying to own the material, every track is a success. Every track smokes. Shreds. Rocks. A very enjoyable album and I don't think you need to be a hard-core Beefheart fan to get into it.

That's the Way I Feel Now: A Tribute to Thelonious Monk

A wide variety of artists from the rock and jazz worlds (Peter Frampton, Joe Jackson, Doctor John, Bobbie McFerrin, Mark Bingam...) got together to produce a wild, weird, and wonderful tribute to Monk. This album is for fans of jazz and jazz fusion who have open minds. You probably won't like everything on it. I don't, but I still like it alot because some songs are so great and interesting (Jackson's moody Round Midnight, Bingham's Brilliant Corners, and the swinging versions of Bye-Ya and In Walked Bud are among my favorites.) This album has commercial stars, but it was NOT made to sell and make money. It was made because these folks love music and love Monk. And it shows. This is the cd version of the 2 disc vinyl so those of you who had the original record will note there are about some cuts missing, this is what I got. If you vinyl guys have it/ please send the link along, and I'll post it too. The cut by John Zorn is killer and should not be missed. Great stuff nomatter what. One of the best tributes ever.

"I Want You Around" is the name chosen for this first album organized by Mondo Ramone, and it's a tribute to the greatest punk-rock band Ramones. There are 25 bands from different countries: Argentina, Spain, Uruguay, France and the UK.

Each band performs the version in its own way. And there are covers in Spanish and English. The bands style is mostly punk-rock, with variations such as Ramonero-punk and pop-punk, plus some tribute bands.

Furthermore, the disc is accompanied by a magazine (in PDF) with detailed information on each band.

Stay Awake - Various Interpretations of Music from Vintage Disney Films

Disney Music can sometimes seem a little too ... well ... Disney. Neat, catchy little tunes sung by voices that you just KNOW have never seen a zit in their lives. Subject matter that is trite at best, portraying characters so cute that they're almost embarrassing.

Embarrassing, because even at thirty years old, you still whistle Zip-A-Dee-Doo-Dah from "Song of the South" when you're happy.

Fear not, closet Disney-phile. This album takes all those songs from your favorite movies, and gives them an adult twist. This album will serve a two-fold purpose. First, you can get your fix of Disney anytime your middleaged-child heart desires. But most importantly, if you get "caught" by your friends, you can pass it off as serious music.

Whether a mere fresh coat of paint (as with "I Wanna Be Like You" from Jungle Book) to a slight sarcastic tone on old favorites (Sinead O'Conner singing "Someday My Prince Will Come" -- 'nuff said there!), to downright spooky versions of bettime songs (Suzanne Vega's acapella version of "Stay Awake"), to absolutely twisted rehashes of formerly tired standby's (Tom Waite rebuilds "Heigh Ho" in his own graven image), this album is a fantastic work. It not only transforms these scores into wonderful new pieces of art, but it also remains true to the basic spirit of Disney. Perhaps it is irreverent in places. Yes, it may even poke a little fun at our favorite childhood icon. But it is still a respectful tribute to the original artists who put these tunes in our heads in the first place.

Shadowymen On A Shadowy Planet Tribute

I have to admit, some tributes are hit or miss -- you may like some tracks, but some of the covers may sound flat or uninspired, falling short of originals' level of quality -- BUT NOT SO HERE.
With this release, the opposite is true. The songs take a new life of their own and the end result is a genuine treasure. I've bought my share of instro tributes, but this one is better than all.
The reason? I have to guess that it's got a lot to do with The Shadowy Men's status as one of the forefathers of the third wave of Surf Instro, and being a seminal band in both the US and Canada.
Don't miss out on this one. A++ all the way.

Upstairs At Larry's - Lawrence Welk Uncorked

Whoever thought that Lawrence Welk could be anything but "old school cool?" With revamped and remixed cuts from some of the best club DJ's around, Lawrence Welk has been re-invented and club kids and hipsters all over will soon be sipping champagne and grooving to Larry. The frothiness of the originals is not diminished in any way - making this a real heartfelt tribute. With songs like "You are My Sunshine" and "Baby Elephant Walk" backed by thumping beats and mellow grooves like "Caravan" this would be a perfect fit at any club, lounge, or party. It is best listened to the whole way through because the album is so wonderfully constructed song by song it takes you on a journey that comes full circle. All in all, fabulously fun and clever in a bubbly modern sorf of way. If you are a lover of loungey songs done with a very modern take, then you might want this. Fun to freak out the grandarents.

Lonnies Smith Trio - Foxy Lady

Four lengthy interpretations of Hendrix tunes by a relaxed trio of John Abercrombie, Lonnie Smith, and Marvin Smith. Abercrombie retains his identity while spooling out tasty lines of dissonance and happy threads of jazzy melody. But it is Smith who most impresses, pulverizing with abrupt keyboard washes from Mars, while still maintaining a groove and a direction.

These guys are masters of their respective instruments ,all are legends in their own right .. their interpretations of Jimi's stuff is a very nice listen ..John does not play like Jimi ,John is John , and what a fine guitarist he is..His ECM work is wonderful , especially when teamed with Charles Lloyd . I like the track 'Jimi Meets Miles' on this disc .. makes you wonder ..boy , if only they could have got together in the studio! Great Jazz Power Trio here!! Not a Hendrix imitation, instead, a very cool jazz Jimi tribute not many have heard.

Sabbath in the Suburbs - The Lounge Brigade

Really fun take on the metal gods. You don’t have to be a hardcore Sabbath fan to get into this. Picture the tired old Iron Man & Paranoid with a Latin Salsa beat! It is hilariously well done. The beat is kind of like "Livin' la vida loca from Ricky Martin" Mr.Crowley is played with congas some mystery harps and acoustic guitars, sounds like Cuban/Spanish music from the 50's, not bad. Crazy Train is played with cheezy synthesizers and it reminds me of the later Beach Boys, tolerable. Bark of the Moon is horrible elevator music similar to what you hear at the dentist waiting room. Shot in the dark is New cabaret music, kinda jazzy, good to sneak into a party comp. Just kick back and drink a rum and coke with a cigar. Flying high again- 50's music. Sabbath Bloody Sabbath is really jazzy, takes some getting used to. The tenth song is an original by The Lounge Brigade to keep that loungy feel. They should have added more songs and used all the CD space with the 17 songs that would have fit. Who knew Black Sabbath worked well as swingin’ fun. I can certainly appreciate genre cross-over... if it's done WELL. On this album, for the most part, it is. Check it out.

Organ-Ized - A Tribute to The Hammond B3

High Street/Windham Hill's Organ-Ized is nothing less than a salute to the classic Hammond B3 organ by some of the preeminent mainstream practitioners of the instrument in the late '90s. If you love the Hammond B3, you'll love this collection. A great sampling of various styles, each with it's own "twist". While this might not showcase the idiosyncrasies of the instrument, that's fine, because this delivers exactly what most Hammond diehards want — funky grooves and licks from the likes of Joey DeFrancesco, John Medeski, Art Neville, Michael Omartian, Jimmy Smith, Reuben Wilson, and Mike Weaver, among others. Some cuts cook more than others, but there are no duff tracks here — only Jack McDuff. For organ-heads looking for a little more of what they love, this is a good sampler to sample.

Hold The Vocals - A Tribute to Instrumental Music

Tribute CDs are usually a hit or miss affair. This one's a bit different. Rather than concentrating on one artist, or a specific genre, Hold the Vocals salutes the instrumental tunes that were hits during the 50's, 60's and 70's, and overall, the results are quite good. Most of the bands featured here will be unknown to the masses, but that’s part of their charm. Independent/obscure artists are often just as enjoyable (sometimes more so) as their über-moneymaking peers. As for the artists being covered here, you can't get much more variety: how about Captain Beefheart, Henry Mancini, Led Zeppelin, Funkadelic, & The Beach Boys for starters?
The Squirrels get the award for the most innovative tune (or tunes, in this case) for their mixing of "Hawaii Five-O" and Dave Brubeck's "Take Five." This may seem like an unlikely combination, but it really works. Waterdogs turn in a fine cover of Henry Mancini's theme from the Blake Edwards movie, Experiment in Terror. Ever wonder what The Allman Brothers Band would sound like as a surf band? Check out Hugh Jones' cool take on "Don't Want You No More" and you'll get a good idea. Jones never strays too far from the classic ABB sound, but he gives you an idea of what they could sound like. Bill Wolford's Head serves up a funked-up rendition of Zeppelin's "Moby Dick," only instead of the drum solo, Wolford throws in orgasmic moans and samples of "Whole Lotta Love." Link Wray, who is probably best known as the man responsible for inventing the power chord, is ably represented here by d.A. Sebasstian's with his version of Wray's "Rumble." Things quiet down a bit on tracks by Adam & His Ballard Playboys (who contribute a beautiful cover of Santo & Johnny's "Sleepwalk") and Michael R. Bristow (with his acoustic version of The Beach Boys' "Pet Sounds").Over the course of the next three tracks, this CD is all over the musical palette--from rockabilly (The Exploding Pintos' cover of Jeff Beck's "Jeff's Boogie") to electronica (on Swedish Whistler's version of Hot Butter's "Popcorn," complete with the sound of popping corn at the end) to ambient trance (on Trance to the Sun's ethereal take on Fleetwood Mac's "Albatross"). On Alonzo "Blind Pineapple" Phillips' "Pipeline," the song sounds like something out of a spaghetti western instead of the surf classic made famous by The Chantays and later by Dick Dale and Stevie Ray Vaughan.
The two tracks that are really far out are Elvis X's almost unrecognizable cover of Billy Preston's "Outtaspace" and Clang Quartet's deconstruction of Edgar Winter's "Frankenstein." The drum solo sounds like it's being played on coffee cans... Maybe that's the idea. This is worth a listen, and in most cases, more than one. If you're a fan of covers songs or any of the bands covered here, Hold the Vocals will make a great addition to your collection.

Star Wars - Cocktails in the Cantina

Before John Williams moved to California and became a hugely famous composer of film scores, he gigged in numerous New York jazz clubs, performed on Henry Mancinni's recording of the Peter Gunn theme, and served as band leader and arranger for crooner Frankie Laine. He was known then as "Johnny" Williams. And it's to Johnny and this era that Carvin Knowles and the Evil Genius Orchestra dedicate this album of Star Wars covers, Cocktails in the Cantina, clever arrangements for big band orchestra circa the late 50's in styles ranging from jazz and mambo to bossa nova performed by some of southern California's best studio musicians. Knowles is himself a resident of Los Angles and composer for film, the most well known of his projects being music for the comedy, American Pie. Apparently rich in curiosity and all things musical, he has composed, produced and arranged in a number of genres, from big band to jazz to blues, from funk to club. His most recent project is a world beat recording called Hamsa. Despite the obvious appearance, Cocktails in the Cantina is not a commercial knock-off, but a project that shows some musical wit. The Imperial March starts off with pounding tympanis followed by tenor sax and trombones playing the theme down low, with the trumpets coming in a bar later on the high end in a hilarious mambo swing. The well-worn Cantina Band number is slowed down to about half the original speed, a hypnotic lullaby led by xylophone and joined by a torpid tenor sax and scatting chorus. The hipster main title features a rhythm section of snapping fingers over which a muted trumpet plays the theme, accented by a number of sound effects, including mouth harp and what sounds like a theremin (though that instrument is not listed in the credits). Princess Leia's Theme is given a bossa nova shuffle, with flute playing the melody over acoustic guitar chords accented with xylophone fills, and The Throne Room climax is played like a Peter Gun theme, with trumpets calling out the fanfare, and then playing the lead melody over B3 organ and a swinging drum kit.

Porn queen Jasmin St. Claire, graces the cover. But, back to the subject. I found 'Cocktails' to be a surprisingly enjoyable listen. The Evil Genius Orchestra's renditions sounded like they'd fit right in as part of the atmosphere in those classic 40s & 50s detective flick scenes that take place at the local mob-front nightclub! All in all, this collection is a beautifully balanced combo of fast and slow tunes, which can be enjoyed by both 'Star Wars' fans and cocktail tune aficionados alike! For those who enjoy a bit of the unexpected in their music, this will not disappoint.

Halloween Treat - Tribute To Link Wray

I love tributes and this one is a doozy. There's a lot more variety in styles present than one might expect from a "surf" album, as Link Wray went through many different genres in his long career. In this case, some wonderfully obscure surprises are side-by-side with covers of well-known classics.

Southern Culture on the Skids (who could easily do an entire Link tribute themselves), Deke Dickerson, Throw Rag, Pollo Del Mar and a host of others tackle the Fuzz-Master's material with great results, fun is had by all. The only way this could be better is if the Red Elvises and Guitar Wolf were also on it, but hey, maybe they're saving that for Volume Two!
Also recommended is Link Protrudi album "Hit and Run", which also contains numerous Wray covers.

SO MANY highlights!!! Spy-Fi's "The Shadow Knows" (with Phantom Frank, of Holland's The Treble Spankers); "The Outlaw" and "Comanche" by The Hellbenders and The Volcanos (would you believe they're the same band?); The Space Cossacks' "Mustang"; Dave Wronski's "Ace Of Spades" (sounding like it came right out of a Clint Eastwood western); Fifty Foot Combo's "Slinky"; Hypnomen's "Rumble Mambo"; The Downers' "Genocide" (really, also the Hypnomen!). Then there's "Deacon Jones", a wild romp that, to date, is my favorite Woggles track; Calexico's "Fallin' Rain" (a gorgeous piece which reminds me of The Byrds in their "country" period). So much great music, so little time. Lock and load with this one, it does Link pruod.

This is what Jetpack can do with purely vintage styles (not to mention extremely aggressive guitar playing) on their Surfin’ To No Doubt cover cd. I don’t know why they chose this as a group to cover but it is fun – even if you are not a No Doubt fan. Here you can have JetPack playing the heavy old-school surf sounds (with tons and tons of reverb). Even though the tunes are all covers it grows on you. I love it without knowing what any of the original songs are. You might too.

Hi everyone. From the people who brought you Surfin' Burt comes another spectacular take on a classic. Hair -- The International Tribal Love-Rock musical -- Surf Tribute. Hair was the first time rock'n'roll hit Broadway and is a rock musical with a book and lyrics by James Rado and Gerome Ragni, and music by Galt MacDermot. The musical was a product of the hippy counter-culture and sexual revolution of the 1960s, and several of its songs became anthems of the anti-Vietnam War peace movement. At the time, the musical's depiction of the use of illegal drugs, sexuality, profanity, its irreverence for the American flag, and its nude scene caused much comment and controversy. The musical broke new ground in musical theatre by defining the genre of the "rock musical", utilizing a racially-integrated cast, and by inviting the audience onstage for a "Be-in" finale. Wiki
