So you thought exotic recordings only came from Hawaii or the USA? Well, you're wrong. Here's a collection of amazing, far-flung sounds from the UK. Rare, wild, and just itching to turn your turntable into a strange pagan place of sonic worship. Just try to keep those cocktails from flowing and your clothes on. "Britxotica" (pronounced "Britzotica") is a word you may never have come across before. This term neatly describes an odd and undocumented pre-Beatles musical scene in which famed UK composers, singers, and bandleaders threw convention to the wind and went wild wild wild! Drawing influences from Hollywood, Hawaii, and holiday (any hot and frantic destination would do) they conjured up sounds to suit a modern but fledgling escape from the gray trudge of postwar London. The result is a bunch of rare, mod, wild, and naïvely experimental trips into the tribal, but keeping the white suit, shirt, and tie firmly in place no matter what the temperature. Fascinating, sometimes fierce, and often absolutely bananas, this new album of old toss is an absolute trip!

The Mutants - Boogie De La Muerte Mixture of 60's garage rock, surf, porn funk and manic psychedelia, the instrumental madness of The Mutants is a lost soundtrack for Russ Meyer's, Tarantino's and Aki Kaurismäki's films. Impossible to categorize, they call it "afro-garage-mambo".
The Mutants were founded in 1998 by Weijjo a.k.a Abnormal, who wanted to form an instrumental band after getting tired of difficult singers. Members were picked partly from his previous punk band "Isebel's Pain" and from locations you don´t want to know about. The sound of The Mutants has been wonderfully weird from the first beginnings, only to get seriously sicker since. After the first chaotic gigs with the usual rock instrumentation + organ, they needed to sound bigger. A Saxophone and percussion were added. The originally punk/surf/garage -based stuff is now smashed through Parliament/Funkadelic filter. The beats have been funkier since. You will love it with leather and rubber.

Their 4 albums…. “StereoExotique” , “Swingin’’ Sounds for the Jungle Jetset”, "Aloha, Baby !" and "Idol Worship and other Primitive Pleasures" prove that, Exotica is not just background music for the swingin’ tikiphile, but you can actually hum along, due to catchy, concise and well crafted songwriting, something that was not always necessarily a main component of the original Exotica sound. You'll love all the tropical bird effects, tremolo guitars, and "take me to a simpler time" feel ingrained in the music. The whole album is solid and upbeat, with no weak spots, and even the cheesy intro seems appropriate once you get used to it. The instrumentation is thick and lush with tons of percussion and beautiful vibes taking the lead on most tunes. Standout tracks for me are Mai Tais on the Moon, Waikiki Serenade, and Stranded in Paradise. On this release all the music is performed by Jim Bacchi, but in the past year the Tikiyakis have been performing live with a 7-piece orchestra. So put on your favorite aloha shirt, mix up a Zombie, and fire up Stereoexotique!

This reissue combines the first two volumes from the “Exotic Blues & Rhythm” compilation series named “Katanga!” and “Ahbe Casabe!” with two additional bonus tracks. This album is a colorful garden of delights consisting of R'n'B and rock'n'roll based songs from the 1940s to the early 1960s that all have this slightly exotic, dark and mystical feeling from the melody structures and instrumentation. Most of the tunes at hand sound astonishingly fresh and timeless. EDDIE COLE & THREE PEPPERS with their hypnotizing groover “Police” for example present a Caribbean mento with a mambo and rhythm'n'blues feel. The beat will drag you directly from your seat and make you swing on the dancefloor. This piece finds its roots in the late 1940s and demonstrates impressively how far even the predecessors of rock music already got in their development. The simple yet haunting lead vocal harmony makes this song a steaming hot all-time fave. And this is only one out of 26 rare gems. The album already starts magically with a gloomy bluesy tune named “Green onions” played by German composer and conductor Claus Ogermann, a cover of a BOOKER T & THE MG'S tune from 1962 with a rather specific basic melody that will stay with you forever. There is much more simmering popcorn rock and enchanting exciting pop from those old times to be found on this compilation and when you reach the “Ahbe Casabe” this is where the strange and quirky charme of exotica music captures your soul even more. The title track for example is a song from the late 50s written by proto hippie Ehden Ahbez that combines a Latin groove with a vocal melody speaking of dark backstreets in oriental cities. The album is rich on colors and the view behind the obvious you are allowed to take will open an entirely new world for you. The 1940s, 1950s and 1960s had much more to offer than what we already know and this is a field of diamonds you get to dig in when you spin this record. A nice little oddity is the bonus track “The riddle of the papawhos” by Danny Staton, based on old spirituals and gospels with a 1950s pop music base. The backing vocal effects here are more than strange somewhere between a deep gnarling and chipmunk style squeaking while the lead vocals on the other hand are soulful and striking as expected. The other bonus track by Kip Tyler named “Pu-Chun-Ga” is another outstanding mad Latin tune with wild female vocals and memorable lead melody. Tracks like "Shadow Street" leave you once more somewhere in between the jungle and a haunted oriental café in a town near the desert plains of Egypt. Next to master Ike Turner (still without his later wife and coming legend Tina) with his exotic surf instrumental “Katanga” from the first part, good old rock'n'roll pioneer Bill Haley should be the most famous contributor to this musical treasure chest. The sheer sensual stimulation you receive from these 26 songs will make you groove your mind away. Regardless where you are, these catchy Rhythm and Blues tunes will turn any place into a vintage dancefloor!

More Rondo Hatton. Surf music from Louisiana? Really? Yep, a quick listen to Rondo Hatton and you'll almost smell the salt air, feel the ocean's breeze on your face and the sand between your toes. Rondo Hatton is an all instrumental quartet based in Baton Rouge, LA. The group plays a variety of music styles including surf, spy , hot rod, westerns, TV themes , Latin and just about anything else, even polkas!

The group is fronted by guitarist Bruce Lamb, who also composes the band's original songs. His musical background includes Blugrass and Country, Blues, R & B, Cajun, Exotica and Tex-Mex Conjunto. He has backed the likes of blues greats Silas Hogan and Lazy Lester, as well as Conjunto legends Flaco Jimenez, Mingo Saldivar and Eddie "Lalo" Torres.

Guitarist Johnny Rossetti has a diverse musical background having played Country, Cajun, Blues and Swamp Pop. He was a member of David Allen Coe's road band and spent many years touring with The Copas Brothers and with Hamonica Red.

Bassist Les Leblanc has been the go to guy for groups all over Louisiana for over 40 years. Equally at home on bass, guitar and keyboards, Les has been in demand with R&B and Swamp Pop bands throughout the south.

Louisiana Music Hall of Fame inductee, Joe Miceli is the man behind the drums. Joe played with John Fred and the Playboys for years. Remember "Judy in Disguise"? It was Joe keeping the beat on this Number 1 hit. Joe has also played with the Copas Brothers as well as Sauce Picante(which featured guitarist Mike Loudermilk, son of famed songwriter John D. Loudermilk).

While Rondo Hatton has limited their performances to the Gulf Coast region, they are now branching out to the rest of the U.S. and at the same time are gaining international recognition.

Easton Island's thirteen original instrumentals incorporate many different strains and influences: John Barry's spy music, Mancini's crime jazz, the exotic sounds of Les Baxter, Ennio Morricone, Jerry Goldsmith, surf music, martini lounge, and space age, merged with the lush, romantic sophistication of Hollywood 60's movie soundtracks, filtered through the sensibilities of musicians who grew up pop-culturally obsessed with the 60's and '70's. This CD release includes the bonus track "Monte Carlo Nights" from the Quentin Tarantino classic motion picture "Jackie Brown".
Wonderfully conceived album. Every musician that played on this album played their instruments impeccably. For those of you who remember Elliot Easton's work as lead guitarist of the Cars you won't recognize his work here. What the listener gets is a blend between the Shadows, Ventures, Polynesian, a bit of Dick Dale, and beatnik sound all rolled into one. The really reminds me of a sound that is more like something I would have heard in the 60's then in 2013. Having said that I really like what Easton has done here. Lovers of this type of genre will enjoy this music. Each of the songs has a different cadence and beat. They are close enough so one song flows well into the next. This is in no way a concept work it just takes you on a ride through your own image of Polynesia from Tiki Gods to surfing.

This is one of those works of music that I like more each time I play it. I hear something new. I get a newer and deeper appreciation for what I am hearing. Tiki Gods reminds me of why I like instrumental music so much. No words to guide you just the spirit of the music. Tiki Gods has a great vibe to it. Try it.

Ixtahuele - Pagan Rites

This is a new release, by a modern band, but the sound is brilliantly-made classic exotica. If you love the holy trinity of the genre: Martin Denny, Les Baxter, and Arthur Lyman, then this album is definitely for your ears. Most definitely the best exotica recording in a decade. These all-original compositions sound so clear and intoxicating you would swear they were a lost Martin Denny record. Instead, we have an ensemble performing exotica the way it was meant to be played - organically without synthesizers or computers. 

There are some killer tracks. While this Swedish group has captured the *sound* of those great recordings, these aren't retreads of old standards. There's no "Bali Hai," "Yellow Bird," "Quiet Village" or "Hawaiian War Chant." Instead, Ixtahuele -- named for a group of Polynesian islands -- has written & recorded ten all-new instrumental numbers. And though the band and album are modern, the music is decidedly classic in feel.

Here's the test: Put Pagan Rites in a mix with classics by the masters, punch "random," and see if you notice when Ixtahuele is playing. It blends beautifully!

Don Tiki - the Forbidden Sounds Of Don Tiki

If you're an exotica fan and like the music of Martin Denny, Les Baxter, Arthur Lyman, Robert Drasnin, Eden Ahbez, or Hawaiian music you'll love this too. Martin Denny himself even makes a guest appearance on 2 of the tracks and his wonderful piano solo on "Forever and Ever" is alone worth the price of admission. Here is all the best of exotica - bird calls, jungle sounds, sultry female vocals, congos, bongos, xylophones, vibraphones, flutes and much more. Jim Howard's use of the flute, alto flute, and bass flute is particularly enjoyable and refreshing. Skinny Dip with Don Tiki

 The follow-up to Forbidden Sounds, Don Tiki's 2nd album again combines sweeping range of exotic, mellow, upbeat, and loungy tunes, moving the art of Modern Exotica forward into the new millennium. The vocals are more native/island sounding that your typical mainland-produced track from the 60's, but here it only adds to the atmosphere. It has my most favorite non-pc track of the genre – the very cool “The Natives Are Restless Tonight.” The liner notes are written by none other than Sven Kirsten, author of the Book Of Tiki. This is a must have for any Exotica collector to add to their collection. Pick this album up and listen to it, now. It's another glimpse into the almost non-existent genre of Modern Exotica.

Despite the "Orchestrotica" in the title, "Mr. Ho's" sophomore effort is as part of a 4 or 5 man combo this time rather than the 23 member big band of his debut album. However, not to worry. This is a talented group playing a variety of music in the Tiki Lounge style. The "Arab Dance" from The Nutcracker is very well done. Nice tribute song for Arthur Lyman done in his distinctive style.While the Orchestrotica does perform classics by the original artists of the style--Martin Denny, Arthur Lyman, Les Baxter, Milt Raskin, and Cal Tjader--the quartet focuses on original, modern jazz/classical crossover (third-stream) exotica music written by Mr. Ho too.

Vibraphonist/bandleader Brian O'Neill AKA Mr. Ho's new album Third River Rangoon, by his shapeshifting ensemble Mr. Ho's Orchestrotica may have been inspired by that subgenre, but it's considerably more magical. It leaves far more to the imagination, a lushly nocturnal collection whose most impressive feat of sorcery is getting a simple lineup of vibraphone, bass flute, bass and percussion to create the sweep of a hundred-piece orchestra. Bernie Krause Gorillas in the Mix

This is a classic. Before digital sampling became the norm, Bernie Krause pioneered it all, with his environmental recordings, with hydrophone technology and technique, with his superb ear for pitch and timbre, and with his ideas for meshing their occurrence in natural and animal sounds with human-made music. Kids love this AND adults do too. Bernie Kraus's "Gorillia's in the Mix" may be saturated with "punny" names, but the sheer wonder occurs when you realize that EVERY SINGLE SOUND you hear is an ANIMAL--there are NO HUMAN SOUNDS or instruments on any of these remarkable cuts! My favorite (listed incompletely here) is "I'm In Trouble, Turkey Corwin" (to the tune of Paula Abdul's smash hit, "Straight Up" which came out a year before). A Parrot from the San Diego Zoo takes the vocals to the swishing tails of shrimp, the smacking lips of horses, the ruffling of turkey feathers and 30 other animal sounds! This is NOT one of those gimicky animal records like "Meowy Christmas by Jingle Cats". This is exotica taken to it's higest level - naturally. This was played at SeaWorld for years over the pa.

Don Tiki - South Of The Boudoir

Don Tiki - the keepers of the exotica flame - have released their fourth album This new album is their first in five years and features 16 fresh tracks and over 70 minutes of lush, seductive melodies. Drawing inspiration from original exotica masters Marty, Arty and Les (Martin Denny, Arthur Lyman, Les Baxter), Don Tiki boldly moves this evocative genre of music into the 21st century.

Don Tiki kicks off the CD with "Friendly Islands," a sweet exotica classic sung originally by the sultry Ethel Azama back in the late 50 s when Hawai i became the 50th State. The sweet `n loverly Hai Jung will set your heart afire with her sexy vocals, while Sharene Lum gently plucks your emotions on harp. The track also features Hawaii's most stellar musicians - Noel Okimoto on drums and vibes, Dean Taba on bass, Carlinhos de Oliveira on guiro, caxixi, and rainstick, and Don Tiki's fearless leader, Perry Coma (Kit Ebersbach) on piano and celesta.

The next song, "Odd Man Out," features forbidden sounds played on visually spectacular instruments smuggled in from Burma, Thailand and Viet Nam. The patwaing, the patellar, naal, and Chinese tomtom blend magically with Hawaiian and Brazilian percussion instruments like the `ili`ili, kala`au, ka`eke`eke, cuica, pandeiro, udu and chimta. Lopaka Colon, son of Augie Colon, adds a jungle jazz overlay on bongo and dumbek.

"Turkish Delight" conjures up the perfumed, divan-pillowed chambers of a traditional pasha s harem. Next up is "The Forbidden Finger," a jazzolicious romp, lovingly dedicated to the vocalese doodlings of Esquivel, Swingle Singers, and Les Double-Six de Paris. The intrepid Jim Howard contributes an amazingly effortless solo over some twisted chord changes, ones which would easily trip up mere mortal flautists. Delmar De Wilde, Hai Jung, and Starr Kalahiki soar on vocals with Rockford Holmes on alto flutes, Noel Okimoto on bongos and vibes, Dean Taba on bass, and Perry Coma on piano.

The tantalizing "Bla Bla Cha Cha" features Don Tiki's own cover girl, Sherry Shaoling, on bravura vocals, with Rockford Holmes doing his level best to keep up with her on the saxophones. Ms. Sherry "owns" this tune and it has become a Don Tiki live show stopper with quixotic choreography and elaborate costumes. Put on your "Tinfoil Hats" as Ryoko Oka deftly creates a mesmerizing rhythmic pattern on the t`rung, an unearthly Vietnamese glockenspiel constructed exclusively of bamboo tubes and rubber bands.

Come fly away with Don Tiki as they continue on their global musical trek. On the album, you'll encounter "Billions of Brazilians," or find yourself "In Thailand" where the temptations prove to be too much for mere mortals. Jimmy Borges contributes his smooth vocals on the Yo Ma-Ma mix, in sharp contrast to Delmar's Deluxe mix on the final bonus track.

Forget it all in Don Tiki's secret Bedouin bar as you sip your "Pagan Lust" slowly. The next thing you know, you're "Pussyfooting" into a "Chinatown Bar" with Delmar deWilde for more delusions of sensual satisfaction. Evoking the sounds of a paradise lost, this tiki-lounge experience transports you to another world - one filled with the music of a forgotten past but infused with an unmistakable modern lounge vibe.
