Don Tiki - the Forbidden Sounds Of Don Tiki

If you're an exotica fan and like the music of Martin Denny, Les Baxter, Arthur Lyman, Robert Drasnin, Eden Ahbez, or Hawaiian music you'll love this too. Martin Denny himself even makes a guest appearance on 2 of the tracks and his wonderful piano solo on "Forever and Ever" is alone worth the price of admission. Here is all the best of exotica - bird calls, jungle sounds, sultry female vocals, congos, bongos, xylophones, vibraphones, flutes and much more. Jim Howard's use of the flute, alto flute, and bass flute is particularly enjoyable and refreshing. There are a pleasing mix of styles and rhythms, some are slow and soft and others have a beat that will make you want to get up and dance. This is perfect music for your next Tiki party or Hawaiian luau, or you can play it like I do to just relax and let your mind pleasantly wander. For pure listening pleasure, it's like MaiTai for the mind.

Skinny Dip with Don Tiki

The follow-up to Forbidden Sounds, Don Tiki's 2nd album again combines sweeping range of exotic, mellow, upbeat, and loungy tunes, moving the art of Modern Exotica forward into the new millennium. The vocals are more native/island sounding that your typical mainland-produced track from the 60's, but here it only adds to the atmosphere. It has my most favorite non-pc track of the genre – the very cool “The Natives Are Restless Tonight.” The liner notes are written by none other than Sven Kirsten, author of the Book Of Tiki. This is a must have for any Exotica collector to add to their collection. Pick this album up and listen to it, now. It's another glimpse into the almost non-existent genre of Modern Exotica.

Kava Kon Tiki For the Atomic Age

Kava Kon music is a unique blend of exotica, mood music, spaghetti western, electronica, cocktail lounge, bossa nova, and 1950s/60s b-movie soundtracks. Perfect music for tiki bars, cocktail parties, and/or people looking for an exotic getaway. It's an amazingly fantastic wonderful nearly supernaturally great neo-exotica album. One of the best. It sails through exotic waters of hypnotic sound and glides past sensual dream islands radiating musical extasy for your mind. "High" lights are "Cherry Rain" and "Palace of the Tiger Woman". Think of neo psyche exotica and you have it.

This is an interesting synthesis of movie music and electronica/lounge. This album captures some relatively obscure titles (Taking of Pelham 1,2,3, They Call Me Mr. Tibbs and others) and moves them into the 21st century.

Ashra - Correlations

Ashra was the second phase of the spacy Krautrock outfit Ash Ra Tempel, where founder (and, sometimes, sole member) Manuel Göttsching refocused the project's direction and began to concentrate more heavily on electronics. Especially with the revolving-door membership, Göttsching had always been the focal point of Ash Ra Tempel, making their mind-bending psychedelic jams into showcases for his cosmic guitar work. At the outset of the Ashra era, Göttsching was literally a one-man band, backing his guitar explorations with synths and sequencers that made his music sound cleaner and more pleasantly meditative. Ash Ra Tempel's status as a going concern was in doubt by the end of 1973, having fallen into a Göttsching-plus-guest-star pattern; Göttsching released a solo album under his own name in 1974, Inventions for Electric Guitar, where his interest in electronic music began to crystallize. Less a regrouping than a renaming, Ashra's inaugural release was 1976's New Age of Earth, one of Göttsching's finest efforts under any name. The 1977 follow-up, Blackouts, was also entirely solo. For 1979's Correlations, Ashra became a full-fledged band for the first time, with guitarist Lutz Ulbrich and drummer Harald Grosskopf officially joining the lineup. However, after 1980's Belle Alliance, the group went on hiatus.

Tracks "Ice Train" and "Club Cannibal" are quite rock-oriented with his continued reliance on an assortment of synthesizers. Correlations is a much more driving propulsive work tied closer to proto-synth pop than the space music of past Ashra classics and has outstanding guitar work. Always listenable. One of BEST covers of all time – don’tcha think?

Far Out: Swinging Bachelor Pad Music

Not to be confused with collections of vintage cuts from the golden age of authentically cool-to-silly topical lounge and exotica (1953-1963), Water Music's Far Out: Swinging Bachelor Pad Music is a mini-festival of 21st century electronic production that draws largely upon the work of mix and remix artists from the roster of Irma Records, a label based in Bologna, Italy. Although the widespread revival of the phrases that make up the title of this album has brought the vernacular to the brink of overuse, there's no denying that the original Cold War lounge recordings (swinging, space age or otherwise designated) have spawned an amazing post-postmodern semi-send-up genre of beat-driven entertainment that fairly bristles with elements of jazz/organ combo and cocktail jazz, jet-set pop and good-life sleaze within a conceptual arena rendered peculiarly stimulating by most every methodological trope known to modern electronica. . Anamaria, The Odd Couple, Be Bop A Lula, Tequila Bum Bum are faves.

DonTiki Adulterated - RePost

As implied by the title, this is a remix of classic Don Tiki sounds, which pay homage to Martin Denny, Arthur Lyman and all the forefathers of exotica. Even repertory tracks have been mixed, reshaped, refined and re-invented by a coterie of top deejays - call it Martin Denny for the millennium - and the tunes take on new sass. Adulterated features three standout tracks, starting with DJ Jimmy B's remix of The Natives Are Restless. Now, we're big fans of the original song but Jimmy B's remix takes it up a notch. Extremely effective remix effects and nice spoken word pieces highlight this mix, along with chanting to die for. Br Cleve contributes a HiNRG "Bongo Congo" mix of Bwana Banana that somehow fits in even though this has a much higher BPM than the rest of the album. Lastly, Clutch Cargo Cult gets a great remix from 8FatFat8 that includes a nice rap by Julio Davis. Among the delights: "The Other Side of the Moon" by Ursula 1000 of New York, "An Occasional Man" by Keith Kandell of Los Angeles, "Bwana Banana" by Br Cleve's Bongo Congo Mix of Boston, "Polyamore" by Poi Dog Pondering of Chicago and "All Quiet Flows the Don" by 8FatFat8 of Chicago. There's a mix of sultry, intermittent vocals with inventive instrumentals. This is party music that collates a myriad of styles, from exotic jazz to ska, from funk to pop. Light the tiki torches, turn on the lava lamps, haul out the tiki mask and start groovin!'

Pink Panther's Penthouse Party

By Request -- Henry Mancini was a master musician. His music will always be remembered and anytime you watch a film that he scored you'll hear what a great musician he was. You can actually hear his trademark sound and get to recognize his style. Pink Panther's Penthouse Party came out to coincide with the release of the DVD box set of the Pink Panther Movies. The CD includes the original version of the Pink Panther Theme as well as remixes of it by Fischerspooner which basically adds the signature Fischerspooner sound from (#1) and mixes a modern dance beat to the original. Also the Malibu Remix which adds a big beat sound to the original version of the track. And then there's also the Pink Panther Theme Revisited by St. Germain which slows down the track and adds a funky, jazzy and groovy beat to the original. There's also a remake of the Shot In The Dark Theme mixed with The Peter Gunn Theme called (The Gunn Mix) by Chris Mancini and Lennart. This is a fun and groovy remake which basically mixes the two Henry Mancini classics together as one piece. A great idea! The album also contains some original tracks by artists that sound or are inspired by the Henry Mancini sound. Some great tracks on here are included like Tres Tres Chic by Mocean Worker which fits perfectly here. This track has the french vocal sampling to the loungy dance beat track. Then there's Intraspettro by Les Hommes which sounds like an update Bossa Nova lounge track. Bossa Per Due is also another fun track on here dating back to 2000 but still sounding retro fresh! I remember this track was used in a Nissan Commercial back then. But a great track and work perfectly in the Pink Panther soundtrack. Other stand out cuts on here include Voulez Vous by Arling and Cameron, Sacre Francais by Dimitri From Paris, Bachelor Pad by Fantastic Plastic Machine, The Girl From Ipanema by Fantastic Plastic Machine and Smokebomb by Ursula 1000. The only track I had a problem with in the collection was San Antonio by Kinky. I like the track but I didn't think it fit here. Oh well, overall really fun.

1.Pink Panther Theme - Henry Mancini 2. Panther Theme (Fischerspooner Remix) - Henry Mancini 3. Fever (Gabin Remix) - Peggy Lee 4. Corazon - Titan 5. Smokebomb - Ursula 1000 6. Acid Lounge Goes West

The boys of 45 Dip have done it again with the truly eclectic, haunting, wild and funky Acid Lounge Goes West. This one veers away from the hard acid jazz flavor that they offered on their own CD "The Acid Lounge", "Welcome to the Acid Lounge, Volume 1" and the phenomenal "Acid Lounge in Space", although that style can still be heard, but very faintly, which is what gives this set it’s modern kick in pants. This takes you out west with songs that are reminiscent of Elvis, Johnny Cash, Apollonia 6 and Muddy Waters, flying on UFO’s. Songs of note are the disturbing "Plastic Jesus" from 45 Dip, the Bluesy "Camieux" from Boojou Bajou, “Cosmic Cactus” from A.White, a bluesy version of the “Twin Peaks” theme, the rock-driven "Black Cadillac" from Pepe Deluxe, the funky "Vegas Vagrants" from 45 Dip, Sugarman's thumpin' "Dodge City" and Ursula Rucker's killer Dr. Rockit remix of the thought-provoking "Seven"--although, this is the only song on the CD that lacks a western flava. That notwithstanding, the "Out West" theme is consistent throughout and the songs are well-selected and original. Even the additions of two pure country songs ("Poppin' Pills" and "Let's Get Drunk and Screw") are welcome here. There are quite a few other songs I can think of that could have made the cut on this CD like Lemon Jelly's "Ramblin Man" and Boys Don't Cry's "I Wanna Be a Cowboy," but all in all, this set is worth getting if you're looking for something fresh and entertaining. Over time, it really grows on you. It's great for traveling cross-country, especially if you're headed...where else...out west!

Brine - The AntiSurf Soundtrack

Produced by Allen Whitman of the Mermen. When asked by an independent label in SF to create a surf compilation, he offered, instead, to create "Brine - The Antisurf Soundtrack" including global artists such as DJ Spooky, Loop Guru, Scenic and many others. Naturally there's a Mermen song on it. This stretches the Mermen sound into further dimensions of space and vastness. Way way deep surfadelics. Atmospheric and majestic – goes great with chemical enhancements.

William Orbit - Best of Strange Cargos

"The Best of Strange Cargos" covers some of William Orbit’s best independent work. Essentially a dynamic album of quirky mood music, with the producer exploiting the full range of his synthesizer presets and evoking a quintessentially '80s style of Fourth World digitalia, with some fascinating twists. "Via Caliente" and "Riding to Rio" are exceptional spaghetti twang pieces that evoke the old west. Cuts from Stange Cargo 2 show Orbit moving (slowly) away from the synth-horn solos and overall sound of new age/contemporary instrumental. Though there's a bit more electronics on this record, he still uses textural touches like Spanish guitar, to give a more human appeal to the digital beats. The last and best of the Strange Cargo albums, III matches elegant sequencer trance and understated organic instruments (piano, guitar) with ethnic-fusion and soft house rhythms. It's the only Strange Cargo featuring vocals, with Beth Orton making an early appearance (more earth mother than neo-folky) on the beautiful ambient-trance single "Water From a Vine Leaf." "The Story of Light" are excellent variations on the same form, while Orbit borrows from hip-hop and dub for "Time to Get Wize," with the toasting of Divine Bashim. There is enough variety here to keep you going from beginning to end, not always knowing where you will wind up and having a good trip getting there.

Don Tiki -- Adulterated - The Remix Project

Every couple of years we are treated to a new neo-Exotica treasure from Honolulu's Don Tiki. The new album, Adulterated, is a remix project featuring 11 tunes from their first two albums. Now I'm sure some of you are thinking this is a recipe for disaster (we are all too aware of failed "lounge" remix projects, right?). In this case, Don Tiki have done it the right way. For the most part, the remixes stay true to the vibe of the original songs, so things are mellow and relaxing and not hyper and kinetic. Some good tracks in this mode are All Quiet Flows the Don, remixed by 8FatFat8, and Close Your Eyes, remixed by A Certain Frank. "The Other Side of the Moon," remixed by Ursula 1000 of NYC as heard on the Samsung Electronic worldwide TV campaign. Lastly, Clutch Cargo Cult gets a great remix from 8FatFat8 that includes a nice rap by Julio Davis. Now, things aren't all Mai Tai's for Adulterated. An Occasional Man has a syncopated remix style that I found annoying (honestly, I'm not a fan of the original version either) with several grating effects.

There's a mix of sultry, intermittent vocals with inventive instrumentals. This is party music that collates a myriad of styles, from exotic jazz to ska, from funk to pop. Light the tiki torches, turn on the lava lamps, haul out the tiki mask and start groovin!'

A review in Time Out/NY states, "Don Tiki have a sexy allure along with flair and a good sense of humor." The Honolulu Advertiser says, "Don Tiki captures exotic sounds, party spirit...this is Martin Denny for the Millenium!" This sensuous, flowing piece of work is an instant classic.
