VA Beyond The Sea

 VA Beyond The Sea
Fun surf covers of modern songs. Modern surf groups doing what The Ventures and Shadows did with their contemporary music.

"This is easily one of the most consistently good compilations I've heard in ages. Great bands recorded well with solid rearranging of standards. Inventive and excellent listening." Phil Dirt Reverb Central

Pretty straightforward modern surf styles. There are 2 sequels (coming soon) that stretch the surf instro boundaries into some amazing post rock/avant  territory. Way cool. Stay Tuned.

The Mutants - Grave Groove

The Mutants - Grave Groove
Mixture of 60's garage rock, surf, porn funk and manic psychedelia, the instrumental madness of The Mutants is a lost soundtrack for Russ Meyer's, Tarantino's and Aki Kaurismäki's films. Impossible to categorize, they call it "afro-garage-mambo".
The Mutants were founded in 1998 by Weijjo a.k.a Abnormal, who wanted to form an instrumental band after getting tired of difficult singers. Members were picked partly from his previous punk band "Isebel's Pain" and from locations you don´t want to know about. The sound of The Mutants has been wonderfully weird from the first beginnings, only to get seriously sicker since. After the first chaotic gigs with the usual rock instrumentation + organ, they needed to sound bigger. A Saxophone and percussion were added. The originally punk/surf/garage -based stuff is now smashed through Parliament/Funkadelic filter. The beats have been funkier since. You will love it with leather and rubber.

03. El Matador del Diablo
04. Queen of the Meadow Hill

The Tikiyaki Orchestra - Swingin' Sounds For The Jungle Jetset

The Tikiyaki Orchestra - Swingin' Sounds For The Jungle Jetset (2009)

The Tikiyaki Orchestra exist in a class by themselves. There really is no other band quite like them on the planet. They take the Exotica tradition as established by pioneers Denny, Lyman and Baxter and bring it into the 21st century. Their unmistakable sound is a blend of the coolest retro styles–exotica, lounge, space-age bachelor pad, crime jazz, spy, surf, spaghetti western and more.
Their 4 albums…. “StereoExotique” , “Swingin’’ Sounds for the Jungle Jetset”, "Aloha, Baby !" and "Idol Worship and other Primitive Pleasures" prove that, Exotica is not just background music for the swingin’ tikiphile, but you can actually hum along, due to catchy, concise and well crafted songwriting, something that was not always necessarily a main component of the original Exotica sound. You'll love all the tropical bird effects, tremolo guitars, and "take me to a simpler time" feel ingrained in the music. The whole album is solid and upbeat, with no weak spots, and even the cheesy intro seems appropriate once you get used to it. The sound quality is excellent, even played through a High-End home system or headphones. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND this for your Luau and Tiki parties.

The Tikiyaki Orchestra - Tikiyaki 5-0

The Tikiyaki Orchestra - Tikiyaki 5-0 EP
Tikiyaki 5-0 's debut EP is the Orchestra's surf garage band little brother. Stripped down and more raw, 5-0 turns up the volume a bit, and the reverb a whole lot , taking The Tikiyaki sound and breaking it down to a more back to basics approach. Tikiyaki 5-0, is the smaller, pared down version of Tikiyaki Orchestra featuring core members …..Jim Bacchi on guitar, Brian Kassan on Keys and guitar, Jonpaul Balak on Bass, and Pablo Baza on drums…
Mixing tradional 60's style surf with an exotica feel, the band kicks up the energy level on 5-0 original "Supernova" and the Zorba and the Greeks' cult classic "Shockwave" with tons of frenetic pounding surf beats and a hi level reverb assault.
The Exotica classics "Taboo" and "Enchanted Sea" are given a spooky twang and reverb treatment, while 5-0 original "Ilikai 65" brings the Spy sound familiar to most fans of Tikiyaki Orchestra. The ep closes out with a slow, atmospheric rendition of the Les Baxter classic "Enchated Sea".

The Tikiyaki Orchestra exist in a class by themselves. There really is no other band quite like them on the planet. They take the Exotica tradition as established by pioneers Denny, Lyman and Baxter and bring it into the 21st century. Their unmistakable sound is a blend of the coolest retro styles–exotica, lounge, space-age bachelor pad, crime jazz, spy, surf, spaghetti western and more.Happy New Year!

VA - Katanga Ahbe Casabe: Exotic Blues and Rhythm

 Happy Halloween ---
This reissue combines the first two volumes from the “Exotic Blues & Rhythm” compilation series named “Katanga!” and “Ahbe Casabe!” with two additional bonus tracks. This album is a colorful garden of delights consisting of R'n'B and rock'n'roll based songs from the 1940s to the early 1960s that all have this slightly exotic, dark and mystical feeling from the melody structures and instrumentation. Most of the tunes at hand sound astonishingly fresh and timeless. EDDIE COLE & THREE PEPPERS with their hypnotizing groover “Police” for example present a Caribbean mento with a mambo and rhythm'n'blues feel. The beat will drag you directly from your seat and make you swing on the dancefloor. This piece finds its roots in the late 1940s and demonstrates impressively how far even the predecessors of rock music already got in their development. The simple yet haunting lead vocal harmony makes this song a steaming hot all-time fave. And this is only one out of 26 rare gems. The album already starts magically with a gloomy bluesy tune named “Green onions” played by German composer and conductor Claus Ogermann, a cover of a BOOKER T & THE MG'S tune from 1962 with a rather specific basic melody that will stay with you forever. There is much more simmering popcorn rock and enchanting exciting pop from those old times to be found on this compilation and when you reach the “Ahbe Casabe” this is where the strange and quirky charme of exotica music captures your soul even more. The title track for example is a song from the late 50s written by proto hippie Ehden Ahbez that combines a Latin groove with a vocal melody speaking of dark backstreets in oriental cities. The album is rich on colors and the view behind the obvious you are allowed to take will open an entirely new world for you. The 1940s, 1950s and 1960s had much more to offer than what we already know and this is a field of diamonds you get to dig in when you spin this record. A nice little oddity is the bonus track “The riddle of the papawhos” by Danny Staton, based on old spirituals and gospels with a 1950s pop music base. The backing vocal effects here are more than strange somewhere between a deep gnarling and chipmunk style squeaking while the lead vocals on the other hand are soulful and striking as expected. The other bonus track by Kip Tyler named “Pu-Chun-Ga” is another outstanding mad Latin tune with wild female vocals and memorable lead melody. Tracks like "Shadow Street" leave you once more somewhere in between the jungle and a haunted oriental café in a town near the desert plains of Egypt. Next to master Ike Turner (still without his later wife and coming legend Tina) with his exotic surf instrumental “Katanga” from the first part, good old rock'n'roll pioneer Bill Haley should be the most famous contributor to this musical treasure chest. The sheer sensual stimulation you receive from these 26 songs will make you groove your mind away. Regardless where you are, these catchy Rhythm and Blues tunes will turn any place into a vintage dancefloor!

Over at Twilight Zone blog folks have been having a fun time posting "song swarms" or massive comps of versions of the same song.

For example, I posted almost 200 versions of Ghost Riders in the Sky over there.
Check out the comments sections at the Zone for all kinds of awesome song swarms.

Here's a little one to whet your appetite. A few friends and I worked on this over the years.

Shark Quest - Man on Stilts

With the emergence in the 1990s and 2000s of Scenic, Friends of Dean Martinez, Vivid Low Sky (the last of whom, like Shark Quest, are also from Chapel Hill), and now Shark Quest, there seems to be a mini-vogue for instrumental indie rock with a cinematic, desert-sweeping grandeur. This mine-genre is so small (and probably unlucrative) that it's impossible to accuse Shark Quest of bandwagon jumping. Nonetheless, for those familiar with the other acts named above, they'll spark unavoidable comparisons. Not so much to Vivid Low Sky (who, despite sharing the same hometown, have a harsher and more dissonant rock aesthetic) as to Friends of Dean Martinez, in the bent for twanging guitars and a certain Southwestern border feel. With both Friends of Dean Martinez and Scenic, there's an affinity with the soundtrack drama of Ennio Morricone. What, then, makes Shark Quest stand apart? It could be that they're more eclectic than any of those other groups, particularly via the folk influence added by Sara Bell's mandolin and banjo. There are unexpected sounds such as the "Shaft-like guitar on "Crazy Laura," and the classical cello on "Kell." The compositions and melodies are moody and haunting, the tempos and instrumentally varied. It's still more suitable for ambient diversion than foreground excitement, but it's a nicely done, decently imaginative recording. All Music review

Shark Quest - Gods and Devils

After a lengthy hiatus, Shark Quest returns with Gods and Devils, a collection of pieces featuring works used as the soundtrack to a work by self-taught counterculture animator Bruce Bickford and also in Monster Road, a documentary on the animator's life and rarely seen work. Much of the album is quite animated-sounding, particularly the opening track, "The Rosetta Barrage," which, with its intricate mandolins and twangy guitars, sounds a little like an Appalachian take on a spaghetti Western theme by Ennio Morricone. Morricone's name is often bandied about, along with those of Friends of Dean Martinez and Calexico, when discussing Shark Quest, and for good reason: all of these artists share an exquisite sense of mood and atmosphere. Hints of surf bands like the Ventures pop up on the darkly lovely "Sin the Moon," and while tracks such as "Three Ivy Leaves" still feel like part of a soundtrack rather than a stand-alone work, an air of restrained mystery runs through Gods and Devils. However, the album's best moments, such as the spooky epic "Katherine of Krakow," have more than enough presence in their own right. The wide array of instruments used in Gods and Devils' arrangements -- which include steel guitar, marimbas, all kinds of percussion, and a water bottle -- give the album more color and texture than the group's previous work. A dreamy but involving listening experience, Gods and Devils marks an important step forward for Shark Quest. ~ Heather Phares

The All Nighters - Dance 'til Dawn

Originally created out of a pure love and interest for many different forms of musical expression, the All-Nighters continue to break down the boundaries limiting the sonic freedom of instrumental bands that have come before them. Their sound draws influence from a wide variety of classic genres, all combining to form a very modern and refreshing approach to "instro/surf" music. They harness the energy and personality of surf, punk, country, rockabilly, ska, gypsy, classical and others to form a intermixed collage of sounds and emotions which flows with flawless focus; despite the often drastic changes in style, like the soundtrack to a great movie.

This is a very intriguing disc, with an original blend of surf, prog, punk and Renaissance ideas. Well recorded and mixed, and very engaging. It's not trad by any means, but I really like it. You probably will, too. Check out the archives for their first one - Drink the Night.

The Romans – You Only Live Once - Repost

I'm so glad this vintage eighties album has been reissued on CD. It may not look like a surf album, but it features some of the nicest tracks of the era. The Romans's sound is enduring and warm. There are 8 bonus tracks added, most of which are instros. In some ways, the Romans were a supergroup of the punk scene, with Mikey Borens (Monitor) - guitar, Pat Delaney (Deadbeats) - sax, Juan Gomez (Human Hands) - guitar, Keith Mitchell (Mazy Star) - drums, and Michael Uhlenkott (Tikis) - bass. This is the only stuff they did.

Calvin Cool and the Surf Knobs – The Surfer’s Beat

Been neglecting my lounge buds recently so I thought I'd make it up with this offering of loungeriffic goodies. Calvin Cool is a pleasant surprize - thought it was cheezy frat surf at first - instead it is excellent groove. From 1963. Very fun lounge oriented beat style surfy instros. Terry “Buffalo” Ware – Reverb Confidential

Very welcome return for the excellent Oklahoma guitarist Terry after his previously well received two earlier albums. Maybe it's because he's from Oklahoma, but the all-instrumental Reverb Confidential by Terry "Buffalo" Ware has a desolate, dark quality at times, reminiscent of John Blakely's "surf noir" Tan Mantis (see archives). Have to say this is excellent and will appeal to any guitar fans out there. Modern yet Ventures tinged; clean and with reverb; decent melodies on a mainly original set. "Sand Dune" is a lovely track with a bit of Duane sound floating in there and "Sleepy August Moon" is just gorgeous - almost cajun. "Sleepwalking Talk" is a tribute to Santo & Johnny and fun it is too. The 'Memphis'- like "Groovy Grubworm" gets a great treatment - better than the 1969 original IMHO. Songs like "Our Man 008" prove our man Buffalo to be a contemporary instrumental rocker - like old schoolers Blakely and Paul Johnson and neo-surfers Laika & The Cosmonauts and The Plungers - capable of bringing the genre into the new millennium. As with the others, great guitar chops is a given; the secret is solid, melodic compositions exhibiting big, eclectic ears.

Angelo Santoro – Psychedelic Surf - OOP excellence

Hi all,
It's that time of year again - the theatre troupe I belong to is performing the classic musical - "Guys and Dolls" and yours truly will be on stage every night for the next two weeks.
Soooo - time will be tight and I figured I'd do a mega post to cover until there's a break.

This one has goodies for all - surf, lounge, unclassifyable instros, classic jazz and modern remixes. Enjoy.

Let's start with some unsual surf ----

Angelo Santoro's version of "Meadowlands" on Santoro II is the version that inspired the Berzerkers to play and record that song. While that's not here, these 1988 tracks are very well played and thoroughly enjoyable recordings. The degree to which he develops multiple guitar parts and layers the sound seems to envelope the listener. Mostly electric with some drums that petty much fade in the background.

This is not heavy twang surf more like the Rautalanka style as heard in Boppeslag – see links.

Kind of laid back and yet it definitely grows on you with repeated listenings.

Phil Dirt gives him 4 stars. So do I. Check it out for a change of pace.

The Knights – In Progression

The Knights have done the almost impossible. Amalgamated the old surf sound with prog rock. Sounds like this wouldn't work. It does. I'd say it leans more to the surf side, rather than proggy side, and you can feel the prog/metal vibe. They've also done a good job of covering the song Pipeline, and truly making it their own. The song is instantly recognizable as Pipeline, but this version is owned by The Knights. All instrumental, and all rockin'! A welcome addition to the collection.

The Moe Greene Specials

From Belgium, The Moe Greene Specials play cinematic instrumental surf and spaghetti western tunes that evolve almost symphonically, with trumpets doubling the guitars. Musical influences vary from Calexico-style desert songs to Stax soul to Dick Dale.

Their seriously moody and dramatic form of spaghetti western, with multiple guitars that create a thick wash of sound, and bass and drums, and accompanied by horns really add to the Morricone experience. It's certainly the best spaghetti western album that Enrio Morricone never made and, to my ears at least, better than many of the albums he did make. This is because it is intended for listening to rather than as an accompaniment to pictures. If you have any spagwest albums you certainly need this one too. If you ever fancied trying one and weren't sure where to start, then this is the place. Ok hombre? Phil Dirt gives this 4 stars, so it ain’t just me tellin’ ya to get it..

The Wipeouters - P'Twaang!!!

Right now- my favorite party music.

Mark Mothersbaugh of DEVO was approached to do music for a cartoon about surfboards and skateboards called "Rocket Power".( Thus the "Rocket Power Theme" track.) And so,a retro-legend was made!

It ain't Devo but there's definately Devo sprinkled all through this quasi-surf release from the Devo "offshoot" band. A mix of guitars and electronics, the Wipouters sound like a 60's surf band pushed into the 90's with a hybrid of sounds from B-52's to classic video games.

Four songs actually have vocals, one has some sampling...doesn't ruin the mood or concept. "P'Twaang!" definitely sets the tone,as a brilliant surf piece and parody of "Wipeout".( It also sounds like the theme to a Surf-Detective TV series.) "Twist 'N' Launch" is a wierd surfified version of DEVO's own "Happy Guy"...and it somehow works. "Ravin'Surf" is the killer instro mind meld of twang guitar, Devo style beats, and sound collage - all over 7 minutes! The "Rocket Power Theme" keeps it going. Mark goes for a wide selection of intruments, including Ukelele's and Sitars! "Wedgie Wipeout","Rocket-ful of Power" and "Nubbie Boardsmen" are all by the book surf tunes....with a sci-fi edge. A funny album punchline comes with the meshing of 90's Sampling and 60's surf in the craziness called "Shut Up Little Man!",brimming with B-Movie cheesiness!
The one track that can be called "DEVO" is "Luna Goona Park". This is because Gerry Casale is involved with this one. It's a lot of fun. And would probably make it on to any surf tribute album. Good choice guys! When Robots ride the surf...be assured The Wipeouters will be supplying the soundtrack!

Danny Morris - Golden Prize

Morris has changed the supporting cast from his first two CD's replacing Michael Maye and Paul Barker on bass guitar with John Coppola and George Johnson on drums with Joe Wells. The resulting sound has also shifted away from the surf blues formula found on the first two releases to surf pop which, while good, makes for a slight shock. Remaining true to surf, Morris has included a blistering cover of "Pipeline" and original tunes "Flight School", "Arthur's Boogie" and "Ooh Wee!". On the pop side, Morris instrumentally covers the Lennon/McCartney tune "Please Please Me" and includes original tunes "Your Mine" and "Twistin' Kristin". Probably the most interesting tunes on the disc are "Baila Para Mi" and "You're Mine" which have a nice spanish flare. While, I prefer the original blusey mix on the two previous discs, there is still plenty to enjoy on this retro pop sounding disc.
