The Volcanos - Krakatoa SurfQuake

One of the best new trad bands around, and they are from Royal Oak, Michigan. They are also essentially the same as the incredible Hell Benders (best spaghetti western band anywhere!) and the Surfin' Zombies and are rumored to include ex-Snake-Out members. There's something in the water in Royal Oak that makes the guitars twang an extra smidgen. Great CD, and a band to watch! - Phil Dirt.

Pink Panther's Penthouse Party

By Request -- Henry Mancini was a master musician. His music will always be remembered and anytime you watch a film that he scored you'll hear what a great musician he was. You can actually hear his trademark sound and get to recognize his style. Pink Panther's Penthouse Party came out to coincide with the release of the DVD box set of the Pink Panther Movies. The CD includes the original version of the Pink Panther Theme as well as remixes of it by Fischerspooner which basically adds the signature Fischerspooner sound from (#1) and mixes a modern dance beat to the original. Also the Malibu Remix which adds a big beat sound to the original version of the track. And then there's also the Pink Panther Theme Revisited by St. Germain which slows down the track and adds a funky, jazzy and groovy beat to the original. There's also a remake of the Shot In The Dark Theme mixed with The Peter Gunn Theme called (The Gunn Mix) by Chris Mancini and Lennart. This is a fun and groovy remake which basically mixes the two Henry Mancini classics together as one piece. A great idea! The album also contains some original tracks by artists that sound or are inspired by the Henry Mancini sound. Some great tracks on here are included like Tres Tres Chic by Mocean Worker which fits perfectly here. This track has the french vocal sampling to the loungy dance beat track. Then there's Intraspettro by Les Hommes which sounds like an update Bossa Nova lounge track. Bossa Per Due is also another fun track on here dating back to 2000 but still sounding retro fresh! I remember this track was used in a Nissan Commercial back then. But a great track and work perfectly in the Pink Panther soundtrack. Other stand out cuts on here include Voulez Vous by Arling and Cameron, Sacre Francais by Dimitri From Paris, Bachelor Pad by Fantastic Plastic Machine, The Girl From Ipanema by Fantastic Plastic Machine and Smokebomb by Ursula 1000. The only track I had a problem with in the collection was San Antonio by Kinky. I like the track but I didn't think it fit here. Oh well, overall really fun.

Big Lazy - Self Titled

Trustar – see sidebar – turned me onto these guys a couple of years ago. These guys are GREAT. This a superb album of instrumentals played with stand-up bass (often bowed instead of plucked, making it as melodic an instrument as the guitar), reverb drenched rockabilly/jazz guitar (reminiscent of Marc Ribot's playing on "Rain Dogs" by Tom Waits), and aggressive and inventive percussion. Fans of everything from Flat Duo Jets to Charles Mingus should check this out. It's as if Lnk Wray was playing a noir-ish jazz standard like 'Harlem Nocturne'. Furthermore, there's not a bum track on the entire disc, which is pleasantly unusual. Finally, this is music that works really well as background music (what with no lyrics and hardly any singing), or in the foreground, since the ideas and playing are good enough to pay attention to. Way recommended.

Santana - Best Instrumentals 2

Two years after it's release of the "Best Instrumentals" Sony is back with another compilation which builds upon and compliments the first release. Again, Sony deserves a lot of credit for recognizing Santana's outstanding guitar playing ability and for taking the time to sift through a decades worth of music to isolate these instrumentals. On Volume 2, Sony collects 14 more instrumentals covering Santana's 30 plus year career. Included here is the sonically beautiful "Revelations" through the precussion laced "Primera Invasion". Despite the title, Sony has included two tunes with spanish vocals, "Jingo" and "Oye Como Va". While these tunes are mainly instrumentals, I am positive that there are at least two other pieces which would have qualified this as an entire instrumental release similar to Volume 1. Overall, it's approximately 56 minutes of great instrumentals that will save you countless hours of attempting to sort through this masters music just to isolate his instrumental works.

Upstairs At Larry's - Lawrence Welk Uncorked

Whoever thought that Lawrence Welk could be anything but "old school cool?" With revamped and remixed cuts from some of the best club DJ's around, Lawrence Welk has been re-invented and club kids and hipsters all over will soon be sipping champagne and grooving to Larry. The frothiness of the originals is not diminished in any way - making this a real heartfelt tribute. With songs like "You are My Sunshine" and "Baby Elephant Walk" backed by thumping beats and mellow grooves like "Caravan" this would be a perfect fit at any club, lounge, or party. It is best listened to the whole way through because the album is so wonderfully constructed song by song it takes you on a journey that comes full circle. All in all, fabulously fun and clever in a bubbly modern sorf of way. If you are a lover of loungey songs done with a very modern take, then you might want this. Fun to freak out the grandarents.

The Residents - Third Reich and Roll with Bonus

My favorite Residents disc. In a perverse way, this is genius. Take 60s pop, mangle it and string it together in the most atonal manner and this is what you get. A crafty inversion of the happy-go-lucky sounds of a bygone era. I have to admit that many of these songs they mutate I couldn't stand in their original form (I thought that the oldies were simply corporate rock for the '50s and '60s, and because of that, psychedelic and prog rock in general had to happen). Often the band would include synth effects, and experimental passages to go between the songs they mutated. Krautrock fans would undoubted enjoy this, as this stuff would remind me of how a group like Faust would go about doing covers of oldies songs, do it in such an avant garde fashion as to certainly clear away any party. The bonus tracks are the greatest splicing together/deconstructing Sgt. Pepper and a dead on hilarious cover of Satisfaction that not only predates Devo's version but is far superior to it. In the end, the album itself is a great work of pastiche. A tad challenging, yes, but it's got a wealth of laughs that totally make it worth your while.

Clouseaux- Lagoon

The Lounge revival of the Mid-Nineties saw not only renewed interest in adult pop and Exotica of the late Fifties and early Sixties but also the emergence of a number of new groups dedicated to recreating or reinterpreting the cocktail nation vibe for modern day tastes. It doesn't surprise me that there seems to be another big uptick going on in interest in Lounge music. After all, the music simply has too much style, too much variety and novelty, and is just too much fun to go away for too long. Don Tiki (a group, not the name of a person.) is perhaps one of the better known of these modern day Exotica groups but there are several other very worthy ones. Waitiki is maybe the closest to a present day version of Martin Denny and Arthur Lyman, Kava Kon does a sort of Exotica meets ambient techno melding and makes a highly successful effort of it, and a third must have for your Lounge collection is this album, the newest from the group Clouseaux. Their sound, like Waitiki's, starts with the same classic Exotica of Martin Denny or Arthur Lyman and then mixes in a certain amount of surf guitar into the proceedings, two genres that meld very smoothly, along the lines of a cocktail like the Sidecar or Scarlet O'Hara, where two or three quite different ingredients blend together to make an altogether new and appealing taste. Think Denny or Lyman with a little bit of the sounds and energy of the Aqua Velvets and even Esquevel stirred in and you'll have a good idea. They then blend in a slightly sinister or malevolent undertone to some of the proceedings...Yes, the beach may be sunny and beautiful and the palm trees swaying in the breeze but behind the beach is the jungle and ten feet in the jungle is something that wants to snatch you and tear you to bits. A fresh and nervy concept, one that avoids any suggestion of the cloying or excessive prettiness which sometimes crept into the originals.I like this album a lot. And if you collect Lounge or Exotica, you'll need this too. It's a standout of the genre. Then after you get it, pour yourself a Scorpion or Mai Tai into your best Tiki mug, garnish it with a long pineapple spear, sit back and take a trip away from all your stress.

'63 Burnout - Trouble At The Speedway

What do you get when you take 1 guitar, 1 bass, 1 drum kit, 2 days in the studio, a hand full of microphones and a fridge full of PBR? One hell of a ROCK album – that’s what! Influenced heavily by 60’s/70’s rock music, surf and rockabilly, '63 Burnout plays hard driving, hot roddin’ instro ROCK music in Seattle, Washington recorded at Studio Litho. Members hail from several legendary local Pacific Northwest bands, like Attacko, The Spaceneedles, Hot Lava Monsters, Bloodhag and The Seamonkees. Searing guitar licks are provided by none other than Thom Beckman who writes most of the trio’s material. The rhythm section is filled out by Jim Freeman on bass and Rodd Karp on drums. Hard driving, hot roddin' instrumental rock from Seattle, WA. An original mix of rockabilly, surf, spy and noir. You won’t be disappointed. DABoss guarantees it!!!!

Mister Neutron – Noreaster

Prepare yourselves, music lovers -- a NOR’EASTER is a’brewin’! This is the third -- and brand-spanking-newest -- release by one of the East Coast’s best surf/instrumental trios, Mister Neutron. It’s slathered in everything that makes this band special: creative, original modern-surf melodies, lightning-fast playing and a subtlety and tightness that comes from playing together for 24 years. The 17 songs take you on a joy ride that ricochets between serene and downright menacing. Thrill to the ferocious double picking, the chilling glissandos and the trem-bar bends.Showcasing several instro-rock styles, including modern and classic surf, a slack-key-inspired acoustic tune, Hammond organ-drenched spy rock and spaghetti western via a new arrangement of “Hang ’Em High.” And although it’s packed with New Jersey references (Point Pleasant, Sea Girt, Tiki Barber), people will do the Neutron Stomp all over the place. The perfect soundtrack to everything you'll do this summer. Enjoy.

Santana- Best Instrumentals Vol. 1

There are many great guitarists in the world and Carlos Santana is certainly one of those. Long ago I made my own version of this album on cassette because I wanted all these great instumentals on one tape. Finally it has been done and been done right. Hat's off to Sony for recognizing Santana's outstanding guitar playing ability and for taking the time to sift through a decades worth of music to isolate these instrumentals. Included here is a tune from Santana's first release in 1969 "Soul Sacrifice", the incomparable "Blues for Salvador" from his 1987 release of the same name as well as "Europa" from the Amigos album. Overall, it's 71 minutes of great instrumentals that will save you countless hours of attempting to sort through this masters music just to isolate his instrumental works.

This was so successful that Vol 2. was compiled – coming soon to the Lounge.

MC Honky – I Am the Messiah

Think "United Future Organization", mixed with some "Fat Boy Slim", a pinch of "Dandy Warhols", and all layered on top of a 60's flick soundtrack.

I Am the Messiah is a bold statement for a debut artist but it might make slightly more sense when you realize that you’re actually hearing seasoned veteran, E of the Eels.

Under the moniker MC Honky, E displays a masterful ability to splice dance beats, samples, live instrumentation and weird old self-help vocal recordings into comical, absurd and sometimes heartrending tracks. "A Good Day to Be You" instructs fragile egos — "Look into the mirror, it’s a good day to be you, aww yeah"— as strings swell and cascade. "Soft Velvety Fer" captures the opposite mood. The vocals are an answering machine message left by a neurotic woman (who sounds like the woman on the Eels’ "Manchild" from Beautiful Freak) who wants to quit taking the anti-depressant Zoloft. Set to jazzy percussion and guitar, the woman’s plight is ridiculous until her fear of her own mind becomes palpable and unnerving. A wonderful album. Just makes me happy.

Pyronauts - Surf Motel

Hard to find outing by these guys. The Pyronauts' music is invigorating and fun. Listen to it while working out to help you get pumped up, while driving to cruise in style, at a party to get the ladies dancing, or when you're feeling down to get a laugh! Good surf music is a kick in the pants, and The Pyronauts won't disapoint. The Bosch – Buy One Get One

It's fun to hear a garage band doing something different. The Bosch have a full, shuffling sound with a keyboard player who also plays sax and clarinet. The horns give them a 50s rock influence, especially on a couple of hand-clapping numbers and the ballady "Teenage Symphony." Along with rockabilly drumming, skanky upbeat horn lines, and good Lou Reed-ish rock vox, they're raucous in a Who meets the White Light/White Heat era Velvets way, but executed with good, clean fun.

Bent Scepters – Blind Date with Destiny

The Bent Scepters made their debut in 1996 with Blind Date with Destiny, an album similar to the recordings of bands like Weezer. It is clear that the group didn't have any intentions other than having the listeners have as much fun as the group had while making this recording. These "party" songs, such as the irresistible "Take it Like a Man" and the rowdy tune "Gassed," all sound unique in their own way despite the fact that they are all quite short and are highlighted by similar guitar rhythms. It may not be a classic release of the '90s, but Blind Date with Destiny has enough catchy melodies to have fans of the genre looking forward to the Bent Scepter's next release.

George from the original cast of Beatlemania has 11 more Beatles guitar instrumentals for ya. You will hear snippets of Jeff Beck, Jeff Lynne, the Ventures, the Fab Four and a host of other "classic rock" influences in Fradkin's interpretations of these Beatles and McCartney songs. The Pyronauts – Live at the Mystic Theatre

Live at the Mystic Theatre featuring Dusty Watson is a live album that complements the studio release of The Pyronauts Surf and Destroy. Dusty Watson, drummer extraordinare, has drummed for Dick Dale, Lita Ford, Concrete Blonde, Supersuckers, Agent Orange, Jon and the Nightriders, and now The Pyronauts. He is known in the surf music community as THE BEST surf rock drummer by far. It was an honor for The Pyronauts to be able to perform with Dusty and he was gracious enough to agree to release their debut performance together! Keep in mind that before this concert, in front of hundreds of screaming fans, the band had about 20 minutes of rehearsal with Dusty Watson. With this disc you've got the best seat in the house - so sit back, hang on, close your eyes, and be transported back to that awesome night to relive the magic!

The Pyronauts' music is invigorating and fun. Listen to it while working out to help you get pumped up, while driving to cruise in style, at a party to get the ladies dancing, or when you're feeling down to get a laugh! The Knights – In Progression

The Knights have done the almost impossible. Amalgamated the old surf sound with prog rock. Sounds like this wouldn't work. It does. I'd say it leans more to the surf side, rather than proggy side, and you can feel the prog/metal vibe. They've also done a good job of covering the song Pipeline, and truly making it their own. The song is instantly recognizable as Pipeline, but this version is owned by The Knights. All instrumental, and all rockin'! A welcome addition to the collection.

Tim Coffman – Beach and Guitar

Beach & Guitar is a collection of original tunes penned by Coffman that virtually shimmer in the hot sun and sand of Southern California and Hawaii. An outstanding effort that is, in Coffman’s words, "a product of everything I’ve ever heard." The album brings together some outstanding musicians familiar to those who know Coffman’s earlier work, as well as an ace or two uniquely suited to this specific project.

Most notably, surf guitar ace and legend Paul Johnson (Belairs, Surfaris, Duotones) and the incomparable Hawaiian steel guitarist Greg Sardinna bring instant credibility to Beach & Guitar. In an unexpected and pleasant surprise, making a guest appearance is veteran drummer Dave Raven (Surfaris, Swirling Eddies, ad infinitum).

Beach & Guitar delivers 11 stunning tracks as guitarists Anthony Da Luz and Beau Mac Dougall join in the fun and take Coffman's arrangements off the page. Drummers Duncan Moore, Brian Cantrell, Dave Raven and Dale Patterson provide the rim-shots and floor tom rumble... Keyboardist Tony Patler adds the sparkle and air. Coffman used real authentic vintage mics, recording gear and instruments to get the vintage tones. The result is a sound that is clear, warm and deep. Just like that beach vacation. More on the relaxing side of surf. If you like excellent musicianship and the DuoTones (see archives) – you will like this.

The Bent Scepters – Hellavator Music

The Bent Scepters (for lack of a better word) ROCK. And Hellevator Music is simply the latest refinement of this band's uncanny knack for creating dirty, supercharged garage rock that'll rip you out of your seat, drag you feet first to the dance floor and leave you there until you've sweat all three of those vodka martinis out of your system and are still screaming for more. One of a few truly inspired bands that can actually get the swing and rockabilly crowd out on the dance floor doing the twist! Excellent 60's garage with a modern sensibility.
