Hello boils and ghouls! It's that time of year again. Halloween is coming up in few weeks and some of you are still probably deciding on the costume that you’re going to wear to buddy's Halloween party. Something scary, silly, or sexy [I hope that's just the chicks].Well, I've been busy compiling an audio accompaniment for your little Monster Shindig. Life in general needs a good soundtrack and Halloween is no exception. What you dig up here is a mix of spooky surf, moon crazed rockabilly, and lurking sounds from the unknown. I think this will be pleasant and discomforting listening at the same time.

Some of you will notice there are a few songs that might bleed into each other, but you won't even care after you toss back a few shots of that green slimy stuff with the mystery lumps your fiend has concocted for the uninvited creeps that always lurk in unexpected.I could have made 2 volumes of music, trust me. Maybe with a little encouragement I will, we'll just see how this goes.
I really tried to capture the sound of Halloween not just some scary sounding song title, I mean the song "Go Go Girl" by the Fiends doesn't ring ScArY does it? Just wait until you hear it. Well, Germs and Vamps try not to drool too much, DaBoss is watching and you’ll have to clean it up afterwards.

Phantom Creeps and Damien Storm - Greetings From Hell

They are the creepiest most terror-ific garage band around! Combining clean Fender reverb tones with grinding fuzz, The Phantom Creeps churn out some of the most horrific music... that doesn't take its self too seriously. Their influences range from The Cramps and Deadbolt to The Ghastly Ones. Phantom Creeps newest release, a split disc with New Orleans Damien Storm features several instrumentals as well as some vocal stylings that will help get you in the Halloween mood. There are some straight ahead surf songs like "Witch Hunt" as well as the sinister stomp of "Redrum" and the garage punk sing along "Little Ghoul". Fun stuff.

Reverb Syndicate - Sputink A - Go-Go

This time, The Reverb Syndicate give their second effort a more relaxed, spacier, surfier sound. It sounds as if they're busy defending us from some sort of space invaders one-handed while holding a martini in the other. (Hey, these guys were busy saving the world from the-GASP-Top 40 with their first release, Operation: Jet Set.) If you liked their first offering (see archives), you'll like the second. This time around we find the band deep in space to launch its latest offering, Sputnik A-Go-Go. A collection of ten Syndicate originals, combining the spy/surf of 2006’s Operation: Jet Set! with theremin-laced, double-picking surf rock from the depths of space!

Danny Morris - Golden Prize

Morris has changed the supporting cast from his first two CD's replacing Michael Maye and Paul Barker on bass guitar with John Coppola and George Johnson on drums with Joe Wells. The resulting sound has also shifted away from the surf blues formula found on the first two releases to surf pop which, while good, makes for a slight shock. Remaining true to surf, Morris has included a blistering cover of "Pipeline" and original tunes "Flight School", "Arthur's Boogie" and "Ooh Wee!". On the pop side, Morris instrumentally covers the Lennon/McCartney tune "Please Please Me" and includes original tunes "Your Mine" and "Twistin' Kristin". Probably the most interesting tunes on the disc are "Baila Para Mi" and "You're Mine" which have a nice spanish flare. While, I prefer the original blusey mix on the two previous discs, there is still plenty to enjoy on this retro pop sounding disc.

Voodoo Court - Nuclear Vacation: The Party's Over

A "musically mature" cd? It rocks hard just like the songs in the previous 2 releases. Sinister, sultry, seductive, (just listen to 007/Goldfinger!) but NEVER MELLOW. Voodoo Court's Nuclear Vacation: The Party's Over is one great little package. There are many top notch surf tunes on this, such as the eye opener "Surfing in Chad", the bouncy and fun "Coffee Stained Shirt", the hard edged "Third Times a Charm", the triumphant "Toxic Seaweed", and the energy driven "Thumb's Up". Voodoo Court has also included an amazing medley of the 007 theme with the theme from the best 007 movie ever, Goldfinger, my fave. I heartly recommend Voodoo Court's latest surftastic achievement.

The Lava Rats - Don't Drink the Water

A creaking door sound effect and slow, ominous descending guitar riff usher you In The Charnel House. With a sudden scream and shattering kick of a reverb tank, you know there's no turning back. This is surf music with a dose of horror. Over and over, they hammer home the main theme with heavily reverbed spy-tone and change things up with agressively double picked melodic variations. Spooky and fun.

Caution! Stealth track alert! Do not adjust your voume control, as doing so could cause injury. The alblum ends with 1:50 of silence followed by a blistering coup-de-gras!

Danny Morris - Storm Surge

If you ever wondered what would happen if you threw the music of Luther Allison and Dick Dale into a blender, this may provide a hint of what you would get.

Danny Morris, formerly with D.C.'s local favorite, the NightHawks, successfully blends surf music of the 60's with some modern Chicago blues and then throws in some Cuban flavor and even a little punk for extra pizzaz. The result is curiously interesting.

"Beat Cop", for example, sounds vaguely familiar, as if it came right off of the TV show Hawaii Five-0 or even Dragnet. "Violated" hints at a little punk while "Renee's Cha-Cha" will have you looking for that cuban cigar. There are some down right bluesy numbers as well. Take for example the extended version of Earl King's "Come On" which clocks in at 7:38 or the Texas shuffle numbers, "Sad and Blue" and "Swing With You Baby".

Keeping true to the surf songs of the 60's, most songs are very brief averaging in the 3 minute range. Overall, a very creative mixture of two sounds that you would never expect to mix sucessfully. Morris to pulls it off effortlessly. Check out his first shot - "I Won't Worry" here in the archives. Good listenin'.

Rock This Town Vol. 1

Going for a more hillbilly as opposed to R&B influence on rock, this effectively captures some of the best rock and roll of the early days. A few of the tracks can be gotten elsewhere on better CDs ("Oh Boy!" and "Blue Suede Shoes" in particular are on dozens of more comprehensive collections), but most of the tracks are "missing in action" treasures that even the most rabid rock and roll fans may never have heard. All original versions in excellent audio quality.

Rock This Town Vol. 2

A good insight into the beginnings of rockabilly, and a somewhat-decent record of the current trends in this awesome field. I think this album should have included a song by the Cramps (the dark side of rockabilly), but overall, this compilation is just so much fun to listen to!

A Proper Introduction to Ike Turner with Jackie Brenston

Forget that this alblum is a good sampler of Ike Turner's best work. Forget that this is high quality release from Proper Records. The original version of Rocket 88 is included here! The song, for those of you that don't know is, THE mother of all R&B songs. It is the epitome of the 50's R&B feel- drinking, women.. and that's not all...it *is* afterall, a song about a car! What makes this song so special is the feel. The unique guitar sound was achived form stuffing a damaged guitar amplifier full of paper. The result was the *first* example of distortion. Mix that with some killer tenor sax and some tough-guy lyrics, and you have one of the most historically important and hardest rocking songs of all time. "Rocket" is historically entitled as the first Rock n' Roll song, recorded in 1951. Lots of other great gutar and wailin'. For you rock-a-billy fans if you're looking for something a little different give this cd a listin' well worth the money and some screaming guitar, I think you'll like it.

Albert Kuvezin And Kat-Kha - Re-Covers

In the WTF department – this is the STRANGEST stuff I have heard in decades – I kid you not. Throat-singing - what the hell is that all about? If you've never seen one mouth singing two or three separate simultaneous melodies, you really need to get out more. Go to Tuva, for example, a remote republic in Siberia surrounded by mountains and filled with moonshiners, miners and cows. There you will find shamanic folk songs played on unpronounceable instruments by bearded men with grizzly, guttural voices that will give you goosebumps forever.

And if you're really lucky, you'll stumble across Albert Kuvezin and his band Yat-Kha. Fighting against Communist musical censorship that tried to tell him what styles he could and couldn't play, Kuvezin has forged a near-impossible international reputation for his music. And with Yat-Kha, he combines Tuva's traditional music with the Western heavy rock he loves, chugging an electric guitar as he goes "Oh yeeeeah" in his filthy double-bass vocal.

After several albums of this punk-folk mish-mash, the logical next step is a covers record; and what a beast this is. From the opening strum of Led Zeppelin's 'When The Levee Breaks', 'Re-Covers' sets its stall as a reverent but unapologetic album. Simmering the song to its bones, Kuvezin rebuilds it as a Siberian folk masterpiece, his unnervingly deep growl spinning a magical, mesmeric tale over the delicate instrumentation.

And so they are all reworked. Kraftwerk's 'The Man Machine' becomes a haunting canvass of guitar effects and acoustic play-about, with overtone chanting roaming for carrion. These eerie high-frequency melodies knock against the rich deep-throat bass vocal. Quite how they could come out of the same larynx - simultaneously or not - is a miracle.
Captain Beefheart's 'Her Eyes Are A Blue Million Miles' takes on a dreamy Celtic quality; Motorhead's 'Orgasmatron' swirls with black magic; and 'Play With Fire' is a fair old walk from anything The Rolling Stones ever meant to write.

But it's not just rock stuff that gets the folk-me-up treatment. Hank Williams' 'Ramblin' Man' takes that age-old tale of a man whose heart belongs to the train tracks and gives it a darkly wistful edge, with minimal rhythm pulsing like a heartbeat. Joy Division's 'Love Will Tear Us Apart' falls slightly flat, its beautiful acoustic guitar lines marred by slightly off-key bear-growl vocals. And a Bob Marley track joins People's Music from Russia, Ireland and France, bobbing joyously with sweet percussion and a voice that sounds like a million cigarettes but is actually the product of one too many homemade vodkas.

Great for Halloween. Probably too much for one sitting. Go on – I dare ya!!!!
